SCENARIO DESCRIPTION
A meeting engagement played out in the wooded terrain of the Ardennes at the beginning of the Bulge. 60+ turns.

The Germans are trying to seize important territory: bridges, cross-roads, and towns to allow breakthrough armored thrusts. Central to this map is the village of L’Shone and its surrounding road network.

The Americans are trying to occupy the same terrain to prevent its use by the Germans.

Kampfgruppe Roestler attacks XXX corps prior to Market Garden.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again.
You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case.
Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island.
The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office.
And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about.
The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm.
You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise.
The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job.
You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now.
The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead.
Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre.
The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off.
At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”

I think you did have a really screwy version of the scenario...
The filename is so long and I've noticed that CMAK sometimes truncates the file name so when Im editing the two files can get mixed up. I probably uploaded the wrong one. I've had to be more diligent with this particular scenario in that regard. The initial v1 of this may have had all crack brit units but this changed fairly early on. I may have to reupload if the download is wrong ;)

For the record:

There should only be 3 AT Guns on the map in total.

Not everyone is crack in this unit - primarily only the AT and ATR crews are crack. The rest are vets. Additionally, most every unit should show at least "Tiring" but more often "Tired" and in the case of the support weapons crews they are mostly "Exhausted". They should also be down to just a handful of AP rounds each. About a dozen or so rounds apiece.

I think the above more closely reflects their battle condition at the time the scenario starts than the version you tested unfortunately.

I do agree that I can take down the headcount but am also not sure how to do that without re-adding all troops.

Since there are no victory flags in the one I downloaded about an hour before doing the AAR I would guess that you need to upload the amended version.

Some issues with the scenarios arrise if they have been in combat for 6 hours, and this is a historical representation.

Why do I not know where the British are on the map?

You continually make mention of only one AT gun crew but there are three 6 lb'ers on the map. Why is that?

In the case of your gun crew only I would think of maybe elevating their experience level to elite. Just because men are put into a stressful situation won't make them all heroes.

I too use the situational experience level method for scenarios. In fact HSG has an entire series of scenarios based just on heroic actions. They cover actions of Knight's Cross, Victoria Cross and Congressional Medal of Honor winners. But the very thing that makes those actions the men in them so special is that not everybody on the map is veteran or crack.

Do a search for -
Mad Russian CMBB scenarios - Knight's Cross
Warmonger CMAK scenarios - Victoria Cross

and if you are interested I'll have to send you the Medal of Honor ones since they aren't here on the site anymore. The problem is that if all your troops are way above average the special ones don't stand out. That isn't accurate.

EVERY single engagement I model fit your criteria of being "unusual circumstances, remarkable events/units" I fully understand that mode of scenario design. I think that you need to look at what makes an action "unusual circumstances, remarkable events/units" though. Was it that they were all veteran and crack men or was it a single AT gun crew that was remarkable, or a single tank crew, or a single leader. You don't elevate the entire OOB to reflect that.

I would suggest if these are the types of scenarios that you are looking to do, and I highly recommend them to you, that you download some of the KC and VC scenairos and look at how they are constructed. They do exactly what you have attempted to do here with your work.

There are a myriad of ways of showing the extraordinary actions of these men. That is a great part of the appeal to me is trying to get a scenario to act anything like something was so extraordinary as to earn the highest awards that countries had to offer.

Good Hunting.

Hey thanks for the AAR! I think you may have an older version. The player briefing notes contain a lot of tactical information.

My AAR above is from *before* adding 2 victory flags.

The reason the scenario briefing has "elements of..." is because at the point in time that the scenario starts the Germans had been engaged with this AT unit since dawn...a good 6 hours of combat. They were well appraised they were up against an experienced AT crew. By the time the scenario starts that AT team had knocked out dozens of tanks. The only thing revealing really about this is the name of the opposing units which would only suggest morale and experience level...but if this unit had been engaged all day and knocked out so many tanks then its obvious they are a cut above so even this doesn't really give an advantage in intelligence to either side. The only crack members of this unit are the AT gunners. The rest are Vets.

To me a unit doesn't have to Fallschirmjaeger or the 101 or the Rangers or SS to be considered crack. A unit imo could experience a bump in proficiency due to any number of factors and this could raise their level of playing to 'Crack' for any duration of time - a week, a month, an operation, or years. Certainly this AT unit in A50 is experiencing a moment of high proficiency - to take down 60 tanks in a day when you're all on your own requires a high level of morale and cohesion. They are operating at a level that can only be described as crack - therefore they are a crack unit to a certain degree at this point in time.

A veteran level of morale to me indicates a unit has been blooded in at least 1 major combat operation (taking french n. afrika would not apply to the americans but normandy would) and come out the other side. They are now innurred to the environment of combat and are more focused on doing their job and are finding a certain level of cohesion and proficiency together as a unit.

When a unit has moved beyond establishing unit identity, cohesion, morale, battle experience they then start to enter the fringes of being a 'crack' unit where everything is getting honed to a real efficient level of maneuver and killing and organization among many things.

Since many of the engagements I desire to model involve unusual circumstances, remarkable events/units they will inherently involve troops of a decidedly higher elan. Also unsual stressful circumstances are when the heroes in waiting come out - thats not unusual thats normal response to survival. If I were shooting for modeling more 'regular' types of scenarios involving just regular troops then I would go with designing an Operation rather than a battle. And some battles ill design will be just regular types of things since both Regular average stuff and remarkable exceptional stuff all have a place on the battlefield are both equally valid to model.

Wow this is a long post but try the new uploaded version and read the briefings because they do contain a lot of tactical info. =)

Is this scenario finished?

The briefing doesn't say which side to play. I had to look here on the site to see that you recommend the scenario be played Axis vs AI.

There are no objectives on the map. How is the German supposed to get points to win this fight? What is the purpose of the fight? Were the Germans just going to sit in one spot and shoot at the British for no reason? Why does this fight take place?

You have only 580 British points on the map. If the German loses 5 tanks that equals the entire British OOB value. There is no way that the German can win this fight that I see. What results did you get when you playtested it?

The experience levels are too high across the entire OOB by a level.

Suggestions: Take the British OOB information out of the Main and German briefings. The Germans didn't know they were there, why should the gamer know everything about them?

Make this an exit scenario or put some flags on the map for the German to be able to gain some points to be able to win the battle.

Drop all experience levels for both sides by one level for everybody. These guys aren't the elite forces of the world. Just two armies fighting it out in the desert.

I think this scenario should have gotten more playtest time by you. Have you ever beaten this scenario as the Germans? If so how? I can't see the Germans ever winning this scenario the way it is set up at the moment.

Map looks good. Situation is different. Forces are interesting.
Should make for a great battle if you polish it a bit.

I have some saved game files if you want to see how the fight transpired and ended.

Good Hunting.
