SCENARIO DESCRIPTION
A meeting engagement played out in the wooded terrain of the Ardennes at the beginning of the Bulge. 60+ turns.

The Germans are trying to seize important territory: bridges, cross-roads, and towns to allow breakthrough armored thrusts. Central to this map is the village of L’Shone and its surrounding road network.

The Americans are trying to occupy the same terrain to prevent its use by the Germans.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again.
You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case.
Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island.
The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office.
And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about.
The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm.
You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise.
The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job.
You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now.
The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead.
Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre.
The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off.
At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”

Kingfish, back at last.

First thanks again for the review Smile

This scenario is already available on the SDII, but downloads are far too low for this excellent historical scenario.

To respond to your comments:
- I will see how to improve the dirt road visual effect
- the M7 is definitevely described and was there iinstead of a M4/105 because of the losses the division had had. There are additionnal sources to the website.
- I am not shocked about German infantry not being able toi reach Singling, maybe I should remove it altogether as the main fight described in the scenario is a tank battle with infantry in protection and for village occupation, mopping up !!
- for artillery, I have not yet understood why the AI decides to fire or not, but sometimes it does !!
- I will see the damp/wet mistake to correct it

Thanks many times because I really spent some time on this one to make it as historically accurate as CMAK allows and always enjoy comments Cool
Rellay happy that you enjoyed it !!

A very belated review, but as I see this scenario is still listed in TPG I assume it is still in the testing stage.

Solid scenario throughout. Had this been transferred over to SD II I would have given it a 7.75/8.0 rating. Map is large and realistic, forces are well balanced.

As you can see I played against the AI. left everything, including experience bonus (more on that later) at default. Game ended at T-28.

Of the 7 America tank losses 4 were within the last 5 minutes of play, when my aggressive nature got the best of me and I tried for flank shots ofn the Panthers, when simply waiting inside the town would have been a better choice.

A couple of observations / suggestions if it is not too late:

-There are two dirt roads that head NW from Singling. Both seem to cross a dry creek bed, and the roads dip down into the stream before rising up again. The look of it seems odd, and a smoother elevation change would appear more realistic.

-The M7/B1 Priest should be replaced with an M4/105 Sherman. The army.mil website you referenced states: Team B had 14 tanks, of which one was a Headquarters 105 assault gun attached,1 and 57 infantrymen

then adds the following footnote: 1. An M-4 tank mounting a 105-mm howitzer instead of a 75- or 76.2-mm gun.

-Not enough turns for the German infantry to mount a counterattack, especially those in position near the Weiscoff farm. By T-28 they had managed to get as far as the northern outskirts of the town. Something else to consider would be the mention of experience bonus in the briefings. This would allow the AI to move quicker.

-The AI never used its 105, 150 and 210mm arty. Perhaps a TRP or two would help here.

-Briefing says ground conditions are 'Wet' but scenario is set to 'Damp'.

Overall a very enjoyable and challenging scenario, and one I would highly recommend.

Thanks Tooz Cool

I hope you enjoyed playing it. I tried to be as geographically and historically accurate as possible. The play testers helped a lot improving the accuracy on a well documented battle.

I never played it CMBO as I do not own that software. But in any case it is tough as it was in history for the Shermans to survive in that environment.

Of course once released, comments on scenarios are now welcome on the scenario depot. Smile Wink

Hey Bertrand, never knew this one was on the discussion list here at TPG. I also failed to record the final stats--sorry. Since the revision had already been posted at the Scenario Depot let me just add my observations, tardy though they be.
I got a draw. For me, this was okay as I have been winning too often lately against the AI and now give it a bonus (in this game I did not). This one was tough for the US due to their ineffective long range fire against the Jgpanzers and Panthers. It was only later in the game when the Panthers moved--and showed me some flanks, that I had any success. These Panthers took the VL to the far right of the map and, added to my high armor casualties, cost me a victory. I never could win this game in BO and still can't in AK.
Anyway, I think this is a fun CMAK version of an old BO classic. I agree with the other testers about the map being first rate--good job!

Tom,

Thanks a lot for your review. I have changed the Easy Eight to a M4A3(76mm) and added some rounds of Tungstene to the 76mm s, the most to Fitzgerald. I did not give too many to them as the AI might then be beaten too easily.

The American force is small, but except the flag on the crossroad, which the German AI does not always bother to control, it is possible to control ALL the other flags at game end !! Cool

Little note to Sanddigger: except 3 units, which I now have locked, I would have expected the opposite comment on German defenders here: placement possibilities for the German are very restricted.

The number one complaint by gamers is setup zones that are too restrictive. I think you want to show them the historical setup when they open the scenario up but not limit them to it. That is just my personal opinion.

Bertrand

I am very fimilar with this battle as I have played two CMBO versions and the battle is show cased in the book Tank versus tank by Kenneth Macksey that Mad Russian and I own.
First of all I would like to say that this map is the best map of the battle I've seen. You did a really good job. It looked very close to the pictures in the book.
The placement of the German armor mirrored history well. The tank destroyers on the ridge by the Welschoff Farm caused a couple of casualties at a range of 1100 meters just like they did historically.
The German counter attacks worked great. IF the AI had moved a little more quickly I might have reinacted Fitzgearld's success in this battle but the game ended before I made a move to attack.
The result of the battle did not represent how it really went. The game went 31 turns which allowed the AI to sneak a JgdPZ IV in at the last minute and stole the center flags from me. (I will send you the end game turn) Had the game ended earlier around turn 27 or later around turn 35 I am sure I could have fixed this problem and gotten a victory.
The only problems I saw:
A) The large number of widely dispersed VL flags which greatly benefits the Germans. The Americans are too few to control so many flags over such a wide area. The flags on the flanks are all easily controlled by the Germans. I would suggest removing some of the flags on the flanks or giving the US a bonus of around 300 points to even it up.
B) Ammunition loads. The American 76mm tanks have too few tungsten rounds. In the account in the book I mentioned above it says that the 76mm Sherman tanks were firing HVAP (Hyper Velocity Armor Peircing) ammunition. Fitzgerald fired at least 6 rounds but he probally had more. I almost get the impression that they may have only had HVAP ammo. Also note that all the 76mm Shermans were M4A3E2 models and not the M4A3E8 Easy Eight model.

Other wise a great job that is amazingly historically accurate and a lot of fun to play. I highly recommend this scenario. Big Grin Cool

Of course the time would come when the Sherms would have to expose themselves to some degree. Keep the Panzers buttoned up then and ..........

My version had M-10s that came in on the left side. Bertrands version doesn't have M-10's.

My discussion site is no longer active as moved the battle over to the SD on the 22nd of June. So they may have played mine. Mine will support two player but the American player better be the better of the two. I have an after action Spoiler in the main briefing of my scenario that explains what happened after the battle so that leads me to believe that your battle was played here.

Simply check in the scenario to see who the author is. That will clear up all confusion. Big Grin

Hi Sandy, Hi 8Ball,
Sorry to create confusion, but I think you played HSG Singling 2P and Not HSG Singling Battle . Mad Russian and myself both have created a scenario about this battle and I wanted also to keep the reference to the name of the village Confused (only the word "battle" makes the difference in the scenario name)

If you want to have more details about the battle, please go to the following web site http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/books/wwii/smallunit/smallunit-singling.htm
You will also find a battle aftermath at the end of the comments of my scenario.

I would be happy if you tried HSG Singling Battle but please play it only US vs AI. Map and units are slightly different, but you should find the same battle feeling.

Effectively in a head to head battle, German tanks (especially Panthers and Tigers) were far better assets than the US Sherman. Now one question: how did US armored units succeed to win major tank battles like Arracourt ? In CMAK, playing US troops is very interesting but you must really show your skills in game play.

I'm the 'Rick" referred to by 8BALL, what he said. In addition my tactical approach was all wrong plus I rarely play US because I don't like their equipment.

What I should have done was stand the Shermans off a bit and blown the hell out of every building. Where there was room to do that, it was awful crowded down in my little corner.

Being a historically based scenario it would be interesting to know the detail of what actually happened.

Well i have to say this was a pretty one sided affair with rick surrending after 11 turns. He was saying that his biggest problem was he had no space to form up his attack, and with troops arriving on top of one another the TAC AI was moving his tanks into my line of fire. He also thought he could have played better tactically and felt the force was actually ok. As for playing the germans, well you dont really have many options to manouver, just get into hull down and pound away from a distance.
So the main suggestion is possibly extend the map slightly to give the americans slighty more space to form up so they are not piling troops on top of one another. Big Grin
Hope this helps.

Cheers
