SCENARIO DESCRIPTION
A meeting engagement played out in the wooded terrain of the Ardennes at the beginning of the Bulge. 60+ turns.

The Germans are trying to seize important territory: bridges, cross-roads, and towns to allow breakthrough armored thrusts. Central to this map is the village of L’Shone and its surrounding road network.

The Americans are trying to occupy the same terrain to prevent its use by the Germans.

Kampfgruppe Roestler attacks XXX corps prior to Market Garden.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again.
You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case.
Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island.
The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office.
And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about.
The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm.
You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise.
The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job.
You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now.
The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead.
Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre.
The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off.
At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”

Michael,
I'd read about this battle, and played it a lot in ASL. I've always followed the Gross Deutchland, and had planned to try this one a while back, but just got around to it now. I left the set-up at default, took the GD, and gave the AI a +2 CEB. Then it was time to start.
*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************SPOILERS************************************************************************************ I pushed the MGs up the right flank, and rushed a large part of the infantry through the center and center right woods. I eased the armor to the road, and had a small screening platoon work up to the left. As I ran the Mark IIs up the road, they uncovered some French in foxholes. I left a pair of Mark IIIs back to help the infantry. Turns out they needed the help.

I was able to get into the center part of town easily. However, the entrenched infantry on the right flank really gave me fits. They took quite a toll of my troops, and it was tough finding good spots for the MGs on the flank. I was beaten up pretty good over there, and couldn't advance on the wooded section.

In the center, I was working up the strength to assault the church, figuring it was occupied. One of my squads on the right flank broke under fire, and ran towards the church. Only two of the men made it into the church and safety, but then I realized the church was not occupied. I quickly advanced several squads, through fire, into the church, and covered them with heavy MGs. When the French realized I was in there, in strength, they angrily charged the church, determined to oust ze bosche.

Charging the church.

Two minutes later, the charge is over.

Another view of the church area.

The center seemed to be pretty well taken care of. I now was able to bring fire on the entrenched Frenchmen in the wooded area from multiple sides. This caused them to panic, and I finally took that area.

On the left, things were not good. I tried to ease the armor up into hull down positions around the sunken road. Two AT guns opened up, and instantly I was down two Mark IIIs and two Mark IIs. I had to work a Mark II below the crest line, break the MG in the last house on the left, and then rush infantry into that house before I could bring mortar fire and direct gunfire onto the AT guns. That was the key, and I was able to break the guns. Nothing the tanks did could shut them down. Once the guns were out of action, I moved what little armor I had left up, and broke the infantry in the woods on the left.

At this point, my remaining armor was pasted by heavy mortar fire, rendering the one Mark III with a gun hit and breaking them. I raced the armor into cover to save them. One of the gun crew from the AT gun, who had already surrendered, was ordered behind my lines. He stopped near his gun, because of the French mortar fire. I had to rush my tanks away from him. I then noticed that he had UN-surrendered, and was now crawling to safety. I rushed my Mark II back to the area, and he was gunned down. Sadly he would have survived the battle, but chose to try and escape.

Reinforcements arrived at this time, and I raced the trucks across the field, expecting trouble near the water tower, and planning to get the reinforcements up there quickly. I had pushed my battered squads towards the water tower, but most of them had practically no ammo left. This was a big concern, as I expected French troops there shortly.

I was consolidating the left flank now, taking all the buildings in that area, when those sneaky Frenchmen came charging in to the sunken road area. I quickly unloaded several of the trucks, and met their charge. Fortunately, I kept the three remaining tanks nearby, and they lent their power to repelling the counterattack.

The brave charge.

Several minutes later, they are giving up.

In the pictures, you can see my graveyard of tanks.

The stuffing was yanked out of the French by this time. Their morale was broken, and the scenario ended well before the 46 turn time limit, with their complete surrender.

It seemed that I had way more time than needed. However, I was playing the AI. Against a human player, you might need the extra time to maneuver, so the time thing might not apply to H2H. I gave the AI a +2 CEB, and the AI fought pretty hard. There were plenty of hand-to-hand struggles in town, where the French wouldn't give up. On the right flank, as in real life, the French wouldn't break until I had worked troops around to the sides and almost behind them. Only then did they crack.

The AI conducted two counterattacks, one against the church and one on the left flank around the sunken road. Both would have been successful, had I not rushed my troops into strong positions just ahead of the charges. I thought the AI conducted the French troops well, and was pretty aggressive at times. Had I punched it up to +3, I am sure things would have been even more difficult.

I enjoyed the battle. It was not a pushover, but once I had the upper hand, morale-wise, I wasn't surprised when the French collapsed. I thought it felt pretty good, historically speaking. Nice scenario. It was fun.

French light armor was quickly killed. The infantry moved trhough the trees into the town gaining a foothold there while the panzer 2 moved to the left on a hill carrying some of the heavy weapons to dominate the battlefield. The panzer 2 beat off french infantry that tried to move towards the town.
In the town the infantry took out the antitankguns and took two buildings with a flag. This allowed the panze 3 to move into the town.Their firepower essentially defeated the french infantry. They took the last building with a flag.
The reinforcements were not needed.Easy victory. Smile

Axis and Allied map edges need reversing unless this is some deliberate trick to improve the AI?

Having my men do the crawl of death of death toward the enemy is not fun Frown

I thought they had gone mad, bathing in the bullets of the enemy; similarly the French upon taking fire would banzai charge my front line.

Curiosity made me play this to the end, and it turned into a mass surrender the likes of which I had never seen in CM before, Frenchmen would run the length of the map to surrender as soon a German unit was close enough.

Maybe your goal was to accurately simulate the French?

Agree about the length too far too much time, somewhere around 30 turns would be better.

Mine is over at TSDII. Not anything historical. Just a use of someone elses map and losely based on the whole story.

RE: PC

I've been bugging for West Front since the beginning. You need USA and CW to sell games IMO. Why they picked the 1942 Kharkov baffles me. 39-40 from Poland to France should work well on 1k x 1k maps.

I haven't seen yours - is it here at TPG? I'll take a look.

I deftly avoided the French counter-attack altogether. This covers the initial German attack on the village. One or more sides reinforce during the scen, so 46 turns may seem like a lot, but there are some unexpected set up zones also.

Having seen the historical terrain - and the great photos at googleEarth - I would love to see this get the full treatment, say, in the next Panzer Command title. Would have made a great Operation in Combat Mission had they ever done early war French armour - or a decent Operation model where you could refight over the same terrain.

Maybe Erik Rutins will cover it. Maybe we'll even be playtesters, eh? :)

Stonne is one of my favourite WWII subjects. Did you ever play my "Stonne Soul Picnic" battle?

46+ seems like a lot. I'll give this a look over next weekend.

Mobius and I toyed around with French char xmls for PCK. The game didn't like having two main guns. Didn't seem to pick the correct one against German armour. IIRC even when we picked the gun and ammo manually the game would later switch to something else.
