A historically fictional 'what if' look at the events leading up to the Deutsche Afrika Korps capture of Tobruk in June 1942.
SCENARIO DESCRIPTION
A meeting engagement played out in the wooded terrain of the Ardennes at the beginning of the Bulge. 60+ turns.

The Germans are trying to seize important territory: bridges, cross-roads, and towns to allow breakthrough armored thrusts. Central to this map is the village of L’Shone and its surrounding road network.

The Americans are trying to occupy the same terrain to prevent its use by the Germans.

Kampfgruppe Roestler attacks XXX corps prior to Market Garden.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again.
You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case.
Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island.
The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office.
And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about.
The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm.
You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise.
The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job.
You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now.
The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead.
Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre.
The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off.
At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”

In recent weeks, this industrial center has been the scene of increasingly sharp clashes between recon units and regular forces. Both sides have traded jabs over this important airplane fabrication city. Both have moved into the town and then been forced out again. No one seems to be able to hold it. The landing gear assembly plant on the edge of town was occupied by the Red Army a few days ago and then burned and destroyed as the Wehrmacht forced them out. Much of the town lies untouched, but the workers and residents know it is just a matter of time before a major battle rages through the streets of their city…

After another bloody engagement, both sides have backed off. Again, in the still of a Sunday morning under the cover of a pounding rainstorm, both sides push forces forward to gain possession of the city.

It's over with a Major Vicotry in turn 61... I hold Most of the flags and Rune gave me a nice scenario bonus! Kind!

Limit of my advance

With labels on to show where the action was...

In the North (the last British hold outs at their 100 point flag)

In the South

All in all a really good fight with two major problems...

1) The AI and those stupid gamey "Flag rushes" which are just suicidal for them. I'm not complaining, since they sealed my victory, but they are SO unrealistic and they destroy the efforts of the designer to create a layered defense in depth.

2) The map/battle are too large for the ammo load outs allowed/given. Unless of course Rune never expects you to get across the map. This is possible...but all my units were on "low" so combat was effectively over.

It would be nice to be able to reload on ammo (not possible in CMx1) or to get a reinforcement company to carry the battle forward. But reinforcements are impossible, since the map is so large. THere is nowhere where they can come on map and walk to the battle in a reasonable amount of time! And they can't ride, since the Brit AT rifles are still hanging around and are the last to die.

I don't see a solution for this, short of a reinforcement company arriving at around minute 25?

Why no MINES? I guess the Brits have not been in the area long enough to plant minefields or wire? Good for me, but maybe I should have read the briefing closer to make sure about this?

Turn 54, I am on low, but I am cleaning up. Fresh Brits have left their last flag and are advancing down the road toward the Villa flag. This is a gamey AI rush and makes no sense tactically. Only the AI would rush headlong into a suicide trap like this. The Brits have no Fuehrer or Stalin to order such a stupid counter attack.

Turn 17 and 18.

Things are going well. I have one big worry now: mines! Rune has given me a platoon of engineers, so I expect a large AT mine belt to halt my progress. With one Tiger, if I hit an unlucky AT mine, it is over! So I am going to run empty trucks up and down the twin lane road, Hwy 50, to see if I can detonate something and then clear the way with engineers. I would like the Tiger to stay on the road if possible to avoid bogging.

On turn 18 at least two M3 tanks appear (see map), and they take out a 4x20 m flak wagon at a considerable distance, but now I know they are there, so I consider that a good trade. They should have held fire, but the AI can't do that, as we know...

Well, there is no way that THIS one is going to get changed and moved to TSDII.

But still...Run is/was a master, albeit a sadistic one, of scenarios...thought it would be fun to put together a bit of a "pictorial DAR."

Zmoney, look forward to see how the game develops for you.

Mudhugger, Thanks, and here I was worried about the Germans not having enough. The reason no defilade or cover on the SW side, is there wasn't any. Not only did I have maps, but used google earth to create the map. I tried to make this as historical as possible. However, differences between the German and the British AARs, I went with the semi-historical, since I took a middle of the road approach. An example, British stated three Tigers attacked, while the Germans clearly state they only had the one Tiger, the others had broken down.

You did better then the actual Germans did. After heavy fighting, the British withdrew some more that night. The next morning when word got to them to withdraw, it was too late, they were surrounded, and the order was given to reach allied lines in ones and twos.

I may add a couple 6 pdr AT guns near the villa, trying to determine what was there. A scattered report of a battery, but trying to get something more conclusive.

Anything you would like to see changed that I could change?

Another fine scenario and enjoyable. Held my interest to the end.

How it played out for me:

Looked like a long way to move up, so I decided to send the bulk of my force up the divided highway. Less one platoon, the 105 FO, and the Marders which I sent to the south flag.
It took a long time for engagement, as I was maybe too cautious, but that never bothers me with a good turn limit like this scenario has. The first fire was from the British guns on the south when I thought it was safe too cross the rail grade with the Marders turn 13 I think. They Ko'd all three Marders in short order. ( I never can handle Marders they always turn into martyrs.) But the guns gave away thier positions and with some fancy shooting from my 105 FO I got payback and by endgame my platoon on the south marched to the flag with little resistance.

The fight at the line and for the Villa was intense. I managed to get a platoon of MG's and two platoons of infantry into the olive groves on the SE of the Villa and with the rest of my force attacking from the NE at the tree lined highway hit the Villa from two angles. Alot of smoke and alot of ammo later I had secured the Villa.

By the way, the surprise; the Tiger, I left on the rail grade and the American tanks were never a factor. The Tiger held them at bay and picked them off by endgame with some amazing shots up to 2500 M.

The rest of the scenario turned into a defense for me as the AI counterattacked ruthlessly. I mean they stormed out of the hillside for the Villa. I had my MG's setup well but they kept coming. I had serious ammo issues but I held them off and the game ended at turn 66.

Even with the open field to cross, the Bits nearly made it back to the Villa. Since the AI doesn't handle smoke well perhaps a little more cover on the SW corner of the Villa or at least a little defilade in the field would have gotten them there and made me pay for my overuse of ammo earlier.

But, that's just how it went for me. Nice game.

Thanks!

Hello Rune. I would like to start by saying I really have enjoyed your other scenarios made for cmbb, so I was happy to see this one for cmak.

I am playing Axis blind against Allied AI presumably blind Wink . I am currently on turn 15. So far I haven't spotted any enemy except for the Universal carriers ahead of me to the right in the grain field. I just noticed that one of them is carrying a gun. My Stuka appeared in turn 14 and dropped his bomb but missed the carriers horribly and did no damage to them. The next turn he did a gun run on one of the UC's but did no damage as it just kept backing up and launching smoke to shield it from my armor advancing on the main road.

My strategy; the company of Airborne troops w/attachments are responsible for the right flank. This includes two platoons on the right of the double road in the grain field to clear the road and grain field of ambushing infantry wanting to do harm to my main effort on the roads. The other platoon is advancing to the left of the road in order to clear it. Oh one 105mm spotter is with the group on the left.

My Tiger and two PzIII's are advancing along the double roads with the pioneers and AT guns behind them riding in trucks. Also 3 AA guns are following the party on the roads. The pioneers will be the main effort to clear the objectives along this path with more infantry support coming from the AB units. I tried to setup a fire support line consisting of my two light AT guns by those houses next to the bend in the roads but realized they couldn't even see the UC's.

In the middle I have one company of legs advancing to the hills in the middle in order to secure the high ground and provide some flank security for my main effort advancing to the right of them. They have their full attachment of MG's and mortars. I have also given them the 81mm FO for smoke support.

The extreme left I have my remaining leg company, with 3 marauders and AA gun trucks along with the other 75mm AT gun. One platoon is advancing on the left side of the train embankment with an MG. They will pop up parallel to the left most objective. While I have the remaining two platoons and attachments along with the 75mm FO (I'll probably just use him for smoke) advancing through the trees at the bottom left of the hills to get eyes on the objective and to setup a support by fire line to support the supprise attack from my far left platoon on the other side of the tracks. If they spot any armor gaurding the objective my Marauders will hopefully take care of them with help coming from the 75mm AT gun. I haven't decided who I will attach my remaining 105mm FO to. But it will be either the middle or left attack force.

So this is my plan. So far I haven’t fired a shot nor has the enemy engaged me. Will keep you posted. Oh by the way, great looking map. Is there any reason you chose dirt instead of arrid rocks or sand?
