SCENARIO DESCRIPTION
A meeting engagement played out in the wooded terrain of the Ardennes at the beginning of the Bulge. 60+ turns.

The Germans are trying to seize important territory: bridges, cross-roads, and towns to allow breakthrough armored thrusts. Central to this map is the village of L’Shone and its surrounding road network.

The Americans are trying to occupy the same terrain to prevent its use by the Germans.

Kampfgruppe Roestler attacks XXX corps prior to Market Garden.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again.
You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case.
Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island.
The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office.
And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about.
The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm.
You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise.
The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job.
You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now.
The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead.
Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre.
The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off.
At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”

Yes i do admit that the brief is lacking i do apologize for that.I guess i tend to find alot of scenarios have wonderful briefs followed up with a crappy map along with "let the computer setup"!!.I hate that...Good work Larry,a draw or minor victory is about the best one can do.You would have made a good officer. The object in this one is basically move quickly kill the enemy and preserve your men.I add the flags/bonus to make your men more valuable than a hill, and they are.Maybe not to the General but to the Captain. In this size battle your men a invaluable keep them alive!"NO ONE DIES" Wink .

Well I get the point about the bonus now. And like you said I used the smoke to cover my infantry from the bunker. But my first wave was caught between fire from the far HT and Bunker and panicked not all of them but some. Anyway like I said those were just my ideas and I think this is a great small fast and furious battle. No need to play the longway around this just attack fast. Agressive moves make this scenario work. Too cautious approach will leave the allied under axis counter attack and end in disaster. I also usually play for draw or minor vic. My ideology of CM is to keep in mind how I´d act in battlefield instead of getting a major/total victory. These scenarios only mirror small actions that lead into biggerones. Little tweaking to the briefing to explain the situation better and you got a solid explosive and tough scenario to release. The way I had my men under fire was to split them and provide so many targets that the ai gunners didn´t know who to shoot through smoke and dust cover from mortars. Major tweaking to briefing and that´s about it. IMO as I settle for the draw. With the ammoload couldn´t have done any more attacking anywyas.
Cheers

oh that comment about the bunker?check the range!they are too far off to do much more than pin down a slow moving mortar team!send some smoke out there for heaven sakes,LOL!!!Come on John.Dont spend 10 turns to face down a bunker that has no victory value. In reality the best way to defeat a bunker is to bypass it,get around it,leave it behind. The MPs will pick those boys up later! Eek!

Aw sorry guys,LOL!I am American too you know.Y'all shouldnt be so hurt.Whats so hard about this scenario I dont understand. If you lost you need more practice! You are not supposed to capture the last objective, you are supposed to win the battle. There is plenty of time to win.The bonus is to cancel the effects of the objectives. It holds the Ai in place otherwise they running here and there in the open for you to kill. One platoon should move up the left, the remaining units use cover up toward the rally point. You must leap frog unit over unit to keep a base of fire!!!These men are not recon, this is a small unit action. When the Canucks arrive race them to take the hill while you suppress with the Yanks.By this point the Germs will break and fade off into the sun set. There you go,forget the farm!you have won the battle.Sorry i dont mean to be so hard on you guys,it is a tough one.It requires a bit of luck along with good Infantry tactics. Sad

Ok I see 2 defeats before my PT. Ok here are my comments. I see you have other scens under your belt so this is not your firstone. So bare with me. I choce to give ai +1 ceb as I usually give atleast that. Briefing didn´t state anything but as this seemed to be against ai scen I thought that the enemy is too tough for +2ceb which I usually use on scens that are also for H2H play.

Briefing:
You really oughta do something else than have some yankee accented slang in it. As I have lived in the states it was clear to ne but there are players from not english spoken countries so you oughts give this "personal" briefing a touch of professionalism. I understand and think its ok idea to have like a battlefield irders with NO information...but most of the players want to know little more than that there is enemy in the map and you oughta find it and kill it...I guess that´s what CM is all about so you don´t need to tell players that. Briefing is what set the mood so if its terrible don´t expect players to play it at all or enter the scen with high spirits ready to kick ass. I don´t mean you need to do a 5 page essay, but little more..you know what I mean. Background, situation, mission, and forces and REINFORCEMENTS, man I was happy to learn about them but I would have used "slightyly different tactics had I known about them. Even with these you get 200% better briefing.

Map/game
Opens up. Wide space with good firing positions. I set up overwatch so LOS to the hill and middle flag along with both flanks with MGs and Mortars. I concentrate all the fast moving forces so that they can cross the brush area towards the center flag. First wave crosses running and I spot a PB in right flank. T2 I drop smoke in front of it and on T3 wave 2 crosses. battle in the woods and 37mm HT arrives from the hill I try to kill it with mortar but only able to pin them down. around t 12 I manage to get a clear shot with bazooka and boom. Far end HT tries to fire too but I drop a HQ spotted Mortar barrage and eventually kill the gunner. No harm from it anymore. Slowly gain my way towards the middle flag and on turn 14 reinforcements. I decide to risk it. I see there is a vehicle of somekind in the middle flag area but as my men are tired and low on ammo their advance is slow. So I decide to send the trucks to the villa. they die to MG fire from the hill and PB. So I send in the AC. It kills the HT in the middle flag. I rush it to around the middleflag Something is firing at me from the villa. by the sound of it and the cloud of dust it picks up when firing it is bigger than 45mm. So out of harms way I get a good flanking shot to the PB 2 minutes th AC empties HE rounds on the PB and finally the guys abandon their post. Small arms fire clings to the sides of the AC constantly from the Villa. Airplane shoots rockets at the dead HT in the middle and makes the crew abandon the rear HT. Get the flag on turn 18 or so. On turn 20 I start area fire on the road with AC and rush to flank the hill. Little clouds od smoke shoot up in the air from the road as my guys fire HE while cruising pedal to the metal afariad the big gun will get a shot at us. Apparently the little dust clouds block the guns LOS that much it only gets 2 shots while driving across the long opening. I spot the gun and AC starts rapid MG fire to pinn t down. AC survives and flanks the hill. While some troopers run for the AC they get cought i the open by all my troopers in the middle flag and overwatch. On turn 22 I get the hill with AC so end game. After a hard days work I see somethign axis bonus 300pts. what is up with that. Allies are pretty much outgunned in thiss huge map (for these troops and open crossings) So I get 2/3 of the flags to end up with a draw. My men are low on ammo and on foot against yet 75mm gun and HQ unit and 2 HMGs waiting in the hedgerow of the villa, So I should send some truppen to the hill and again charge the AC down the hill across the open risking it to the gun and get it into position to empty all its ammo on the HMGs while the rest of the troops tired from hard days work and low on ammo cross the open vineyard with soft ground tiles in it.. Only to get another 100pts flag and possible loose all the men and loose the fight. no way. If they´d get the flag they´d still get like a tactical/minor vic. as axis still get +300 for what?

The map is open and difficult and there are not enough ammo on the men and not enough time. After assaulting axis positions for 20minutes under fire these men need rest for the final dash at the farm. Something needs to be done with the scenario and can you please explain the +300 for axis that eliminates the use of getting the flags.

This is strictly allied against ai no way this works H2H as it is.

I don´t mean these comments in bad way. I am sorry if they sounded like that. I just think constructive somments are the best to improve your scenarios. Hope you find some useful info from my AAR. Any questions you have I try to answer them too. Let me know.
Cheers

Played Allied vs. AI. I suffered a defeat as well. I basically agree with Buford's comments. Attackers are outnumbered(!), so fat chance of them achieving their three widely scattered objectives. Difficult to achieve even one.

Question I kept asking myself is, why? Allied forces are recon units. Orders are to find out what's defending the hill. To win the scenario, though, allied player has to mount suicidal - and recklessly fast, only 22 turns - attack on steep hill defended by veterans. Why would a recon unit do something like that?

I tried for the hill. I did reach the hill, but getting there directly involves taking cross fire from the pillbox and from a distant halftrack, meaning casualties to reach the hill in the rush to get there. No time for a proper advance, and no way to both go for the hill and send units to neutralize the pillbox.

I guessed that Allied player sets AI to "Stick to Scenario Default" for setup. No directions given.

Scenario description is confused with briefing. Description, 1st page, even gives away the Allied reinforcement information that belongs on Allied briefing page, a major spoiler for a two-player game.

I do like the map. Axis player gets some diagonal fire lanes that crisscross the map. Makes for a tactical challenge for the Allied player to try his skills in advancing under fire while making best use of not quite enough cover. But Allied player doesn't have enough time or men to make it happen.

Major problems with this scenario. Major.

First off. Briefing. There is none. That is about the worst effort I have ever seen at a briefing. Why not just write in the briefing, "Yeah, I don't care enough about this scenario to even say anything intelligent or interesting." The players will get the same benefit out of that as what is in there now. Also, in the briefing it should always specify whether you should leave the computer at default or not - especially since you prefer it to be played against the ai. Frankly, that briefing is unfit for public dissemination

This scenario is all out of scale. I was excited when I read the description because I thought it woud be a company sized scenario. It is not. BIG map, 3 flags. You have made far too grandiose a scenario for the alloted forces. Look, you have two understrength Ranger Platoons, not companies. Some overwatch. It is not possible to take those three flags. The one hill, maybe. you've created a huge open, dead space in front of my setup which the axis has criss-crossed with a pillbox and two halftracks. Fine. Give me time to go all the way to the edge of the map and take out the pillbox from behind - which I did. 10 turns to get them there and destroy it. Great. Halfway through the scenario and no flags, just one hurdle overcome. See what I mean? You've completely overestimated what 4 or 6 squads can do even with good overwatch.

Then, you provide reinforcements on turn 14 of a hard 22 turn limit. That is not a reinforcement! The game is 2/3 over by turn 14! What are they supposed to do?

By the end of the game, the axis had two MG42s and a75 mm AT gun it had never used. I was nowhere near assaulting that villa in the corner.

you MUST either scale back the map (and flags), or increase the size of the ranger force. Maybe get rid of the pillbox: as stated, 10 turns to get behind that and kill it with bazookas. I like the ranger composition, I did not liek the size of the mission. In reality, they would only have been tasked with taking the villa, or maybe the overwatch hill not the whole map.
