SCENARIO DESCRIPTION
A meeting engagement played out in the wooded terrain of the Ardennes at the beginning of the Bulge. 60+ turns.

The Germans are trying to seize important territory: bridges, cross-roads, and towns to allow breakthrough armored thrusts. Central to this map is the village of L’Shone and its surrounding road network.

The Americans are trying to occupy the same terrain to prevent its use by the Germans.

Kampfgruppe Roestler attacks XXX corps prior to Market Garden.

It is hard to believe that it was only a week ago when we first heard of “The Outbreak”. Initially it was thought to be a terrorist biological attack, with outbreaks in large cities overwhelming medical facilities. But soon it was apparent it was much more… the more we hear, the more we realize that we know very little – the cause – the prognosis – or the scale of this crisis. All remain unknown – at least to the general populace. What the “government” knows may be something else again.
You are Jack McCann, police chief in the small coastal tourist town of Shady Acres, Maine. Normally by this time of the year, your town is overrun with loud tourists from the cities of the East Coast. If only that were the case.
Four days ago a large staff of the Center for Disease Control showed up at the Town Hall, and brusquely informed the Mayor, Chuck Zeto, that the Federal Government was immediately taking control of “Shady Island”, a favourite picnic spot in the bay. This was all one-way communication, you don’t know much more other than soon thereafter a convoy of sealed trucks arrived and barbed wire was being strung across the access bridge to the island.
The National Guard has been mobilized, and your own police force has been placed under the command of the governor’s office.
And yet even now, you are not sure why. A strange illness has swept the globe, but what little news was initially released was like something from a bad movie. Now that trickle of news has stopped altogether. The official story is that a Chinese cyber attack has shut down the Internet, but this being Small Town America, there are a lot of conspiracy theories floating about.
The Mayor, Chuck Zeto, who also is the local bank manager, has asked that citizens assist in securing the town from whatever threats may arise. Given that the local National Rifle Association sponsored Chuck’s last campaign, their members were eager to show their affinity for the 2nd amendment and reaffirm their ownership of large capacity magazines and assault rifles. With some hesitation, you agreed to deputize these men, but have asked them to stay at home until they may actually be required. Their training and experience doesn’t necessarily match their enthusiasm.
You were at your office all night. You had a call from Doctor Jacobie at the hospital. Dr. Jacobie, a Vietnam war draft dodger who only returned from Canada in the 1990s, is determined to ignore what he considers a “fascist edict” that all patients in suspected cases of the “outbreak” be turned over to the C.D.C. immediately and quarantined on the Island. “It reminds me of the interment of the Japanese in 1942!” Jacobie ranted, and he said he would treat all patients as “patients, not criminals”. At that, you sent two teams of part time deputies to the hospital to deal with any issues that may arise.
The town is an important transportation hub, in that the coastal railway runs through the town. The Railway has deployed their own security at the train station, as if there is an epidemic, it is important to prevent those infected from traveling. Hopefully they have enough staff to do the job.
You remained in your office all night, and it seemed that things may be calming down, but then with a complete news black out, and the mute C.D.C. guards by the island Park, who knows? You did receive several calls from citizens overnight, reporting screams and other noises from the areas near cemeteries last night; typically the local teens will go there to drink and smoke up. Although you usually will send a Deputy to put the run on them, there are more important things to do now.
The sun is coming up, but a heavy thick fog has blankets the town. A convoy of C.D.C. relieve staff are expected in from Bangor any minute; hopefully they have some news. To allow your exhausted staff get some needed rest, two detachments of National Guard troops will be arriving, one is about 5 minutes away and a second convoy from the east in another 5 minutes after that. It will be good to get home and hit the sheets. You are so tired you feel like the walking dead.
Your phone rings. It is the security detail from the train station. Old man Codger, a elderly farmer who lives north east of town, has just shown up at the Rail station, out of breath and terrified. He is rambling about being attacked at his home, and that the only way he could escape is by setting the buildings on fire. You had better send a Deputy to go interview him. It sounds bizarre.
The phone rings again… it is Deputy Boomhauer at the hospital. He sounds quite distraught. Apparently the hospital was overwhelmed with patients overnight, and now he reports the motion detector alarms in the morgue have gone off.
At that second the switch board lights up, and several simultaneous “10-78” calls are received – “officer need assistance!”… What the?????”

Hi Enigma and thank you to have taken your time to write a so detailed and interesting review. That's a real satisfaction for me.
I'll plan a new versoin with a little more squads for the americans and more AT squad for the germans. So the battle is well balanced and has a good rithm as is now! I am happy.
I hope to have again your critics for my next scenarios.
Take care Smile

sorry for the long wait. We have finally finished.

I won a tactical victory but in truth both of us where spent.

I had positioned a platoon spread out in the woods on my eastern flank along with a HMG, a platoon in reserve in and around the church and the other platoon spread around the town centre (south of the major flag)
3 HMG where placed in the extreme southern houses of the town centre, giving a good field of fire basically everywhere.
Covering the western flank was a sole HMG.

AT wise, the AT gun was positioned to the west of the track covering the western flank along with one of the italian tanks a bit to the north by the forest.
Another italian tank was hidden behind some buildings and was ready to be used to cover the eastern flank, the Tiger was in position behind buildings ready to move out by the track and engage any enemies infront of my centre.

Shadow opened his attack iirc with tanks moving along my eastern flank, a duel between my tank and his resulted in 1 KO'd tank scrated up for my crew, celebrations would not be made however as they where then taken out of the picture.

Infantry and tanks then advanced from the centre, the HMGs drove the infantry back into the woods and the Tiger, coming out of hiding knocked 2 shermans out and forced the others to reverse back into the wooded rpad to the extreme south.

M10's where then spotted on the western flank, the Italian tank covering that flank moved to engage but was hit from a sherman to the south.

American infantry then advanced across an open field towards the treeline which a platoon of mine had occupied on the west flank. They where massacred and the rest driven away. The M10's then preceeded to blow the hell outter my men casuing a few fires in the trees and the routing of several squads. What could be salavged was, the order was given for the men who had not broke to pull back towards the road to there north.

The M10's before moving off towards town and co-operating with some Shermans blew most of the houses with the HMG's in away.

Meanwhile the Tiger was busy holding the american armour off, he finally fell when he was immobilsied on the track and then hit in the flank by an M10 who had advanced into the town.
This was quickly taken out by a panzershreck, another m10 drove up onto the track at the crossroads in the middle of town and was also destoyed by the same panzershreck team. The 3rd m10 with them pulled back somewhat.

On the eastern flank, the sole HMG has held up the american advance, casuing many casualties and routing several squads.

The 3rd M10, notcing there are troops close to him, reverses down a street (towards the church) whilst aiming at a house where there are some germans. However a 2 man squad with a magnetic mine, with the order to follow the m10, run out of a wood which is infront of them ... manage to get close without being killed, plant the mine and take out the tank.
All that remains now is a sole Sherman.

This Sherman destoys the house that the HMG is occuping on the east flank. American infantry finally start to move into the town.
In the centre a single squad, 8 men strong, hold up in a ruined building is holding up any american advance on my centre.
The same is happening on the west flank, the remains of the platoon there fighting from there "2nd line of defence" is chewing the american forces (a weakened platoon, which had survived the crossing of open ground under fire) which have occupied there old position.

With the americans on the west and to the south held, Shadow starts to move his forces on the eastern side into the town and any other troops he can.
His troops enter the churhc, but only because i have allowed him .. inside his around half a platoon of soldiers, was the americans enter ... my men open up.
More american troops enter the house, any spare soldier i can find ... from the west or south is also rushed towards the church.
During the close fighting, american POW's who had been moved to the church and never rejoined there comrades where killed during the fighting.

The fighting is at very close range and is mostly hand to hand. It is quiet bloody but in the end my troops win forcing the americans back.
However Shadow did spoil the victory at the chruch somewhat, he has moved a squad into the small house near the church. One of my squads moving towards the church to reinforce it was ambushed and wiped out by these men.

During this fighting, the squad in the centre brakes after mortar attack and alot of gunfire and flees a few houses to the north.
It is noticed that there are some my men in the houses at the south end of town ... POW's. A LT and his batman run over to the house to get them out. As they enter and get within 5 meters of the POW ... he gets up and walks to the americans lines.
Attempts to shoot the tratior in the back as he walked towards the enemy lines was fustraded by the Sherman which was moving along the southern flank blasting my positions.

In the final few turns, an attempt by me was made to push the few americans troops out of the south of the town. This resulted in failure and the destuction of a squad ordered to do so.
Company and platoon staff however did secure the rest of the southern half of the town.

American planes made several passes throughout the fight ... attacking and 'destryoing' an italian tank ... which had only been knocked out most of the game before the attack lol Smile

In the end the americans had penetrated as far as the church. There armour, unspported by was destoyed and there infantry commited where thrown back at high losses to our selves.
The americans would now control all of the town east of the track and south of the road as well as occuy a few houes on the southern end of the town (west of the track). They where also holding a small portion of the western forest on the edge of town.

loss wise, i lost all my tanks, shadow lost 11/12
i lost about 70 men, shadow 140ish ... roughly double of all my casulites.

So ... our thougts... a great scenario and one hell of a fight.
During all this, it must be stated that constent firing was going on. The fight was intense but the above is really on the major key points.
My suggestions would be the adding in a limted number some more AT weapons to the squads other then mainly rifle grenades, such as a few more magnatic mines and prehaps a few fausts.
Shadow, he belives reinforing the american side with a few more platoons will help the Allied player our more during a PBEM game.

We also think that the turns should be raised to 40 for PBEM, as although the game was techically already won by me by the end, fighting was still raging.
Prehaps if not an increase in turns, make the ending variable.

Also we were both somewhat confused by the Italian tank stuck in the building at the centre of town ... it also didnt actully do anything all battle.

finally within the axis setup zone there is a 'block' which the axis player is not allowed to setup in. I believe this may have been acciedently missed by you during your construction of the scenario.

I have seen a tank hunter team in late '43 did have a panzerfaust 60 that could be effective against shermans at sort range.
I know for sure they were emploied in the russian campaign but i don't know in italy. I will add it in the next version.

I am seeing is a quite hard fight Big Grin . Keep alive the Tiger and you'll have again some chance!

Let me know how will ends.

victory may be sight for him but it will cost him, his infantry is under MG fire and his tanks are taking a pounding from my infantry who are throwing anything from grenades and panzershrecks shells to the kitchen sinks at those tanks.

As i told him, if my infantry had some panzerfausts his tankers would be in deep doo doo.

So prehaps add a few fausts to the oob? Some must have found there way to the company by this date in time?

the first attack was easaly defeated on my left side of the map due to some good positioning of machine guns my right flank and my main infantry force has begun advancing toward the smaller flag and the tanks are heading toward there too

the italian coffins put up quite a fight and knocked out one of my M10s to but they were finished off and once the tiger was immoblised it was only a matter of time before it was knocked out

I now have my first PBEM victory in my sights Big Grin

I will update you after the battle

Sitrap:
American TD have entered the town and have secured the major flag there.
The Italian tanks are gone, as is the 50mm gun and the Tiger.

I ordered the Tiger to move to engage an American tank which was just out of his sight, he moves off and instead of targeting the american tanks he targets infantry. I order him to aim at the tank and again he balls it up, the tanks imobilise him before he reacts and he's then flanked by the TD's entereding the village.
Before his momment of stupidness he had fought great and had nailed several american tanks.

** Spoilers below **

I played this scenario versus a human opponent via PBEM. This scenario was a real nail biter. Of course, the scenario did come down to whether or not my Tiger survived. In the first few turns, I lost all of my other captured Italian tanks due to setup. (Note to designer: I prefer scenarios where you can not setup in perfect LOS of your opponent on the first turn.) Had I kept my other tanks alive earlier with a better setup then defense would have probably been much easier.

My Tiger tank ended up being a real monster with 51 infantry kills, 3 Sherman M4 kills, two m10 kills, and 1 M3 kill. He was VERY lucky to survive as he took several side shots from the m10's through the adjacent buildings in the town center. At another time, an m10 had a point blank (10m) frontal shot which luckily did no serious damage. The American aircraft almost took it out too at one point. Had I lost the Tiger, I most likely would have lost.

The allies have to cross a lot of open ground on this map but this is made up for in numbers, IMO. Overall, I feel the scenario is fairly well balanced and I found it to be very enjoyable.

There are no briefing for both the sides.
In other words the Germans know that the allies is approaching the village and the allis knows that the Germans are occuping the willage. That's all. Big Grin

Question about the brieifings, it seems that both sides only have the Overall briefing and no side specfic ones.

Just wondering but should the part where it talks about the German forces be under an intelligence section in an allied brief instead?

just played it again to make sure that tiger kill was a fluke but once again it was reduced to scrap easily they did last until turn 22 before giving in this time but I only lost 3 instead of 5 vehicles perhaps giving the germans more armour units would make it harder but playing against enigma should make it a bit more even Big Grin
