The 1st Libyan Division, part of the Libyan Corps, was advancing along the coast and attacked the village of Sollum. The British being better trained, equipped and more mobile (motorized), formulated a plan by Lt. General O'Connor, to fight a series of delaying actions until the Italians outpaced their supply. Accordingly, a reinforced platoon of the Coldstream Guards was posted at Sollum. Their job was to delay the Italians and deny them as long as possible the communications routes through Sollum.

The early battles in the Ardennes Offensive were characterized in many cases by German desperation. Small victories were exploited by merciless employment of their own resources; such an instance occurred at the small crossroads known as Baraque de Fraiture, nestled on one of the highest points of the Ardennes. When the U.S. 106th Infantry Division was shattered during the opening days of what came to be known as the Battle of the Bulge, many of its rear area units resolved to hold in place. One such unit was the 203d Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, dug in at Baraque de Fraiture.
By early January 1945, the Americans were on the offensive to seal the massive "bulge" in their front line created by Germany's Ardennes Offensive. The 2nd SS Panzer Division, tasked with taking Liége (Liîge) as part of the overall drive to Antwerp, was stopped at Manhay on Christmas Day. A series of holding actions went into effect as the battered Germans were slowly pushed back by the recovering Allies, and as the Germans shortened their frontline, desperate actions were fought at critical places. The settlement known as Baraque de Fraiture to the local inhabitants was one such place.

The French 2nd Army was in crisis following the daring German crossing of the Meuse River. The Germans were expanding their bridgehead, and the elite Infantry Regiment Grossdeutschland was tasked with taking the high ground at the village of Stonne. The approach would not be easy, up a narrow road flanked by a wooded cliff, through a winding ravine, and into a small hamlet which was commanded by a large well built water tower.

Worse, the village had to be taken quickly, as sizable French armoured forces were in the immediate vicinity. It promised to be a hard day for Grossdeutschland.

German attack during initial phase of barbarossa
January 1944. A few miles west of Kerch, Russia.

Romania was to enter the war against Russia with a general offensive on the Prut River line, named Operation MĂźnchen, which was planned for 2 July, 1941.

In 1944 they were still in the Crimea, only now they were stationed around Kerch. The peninsula had seen heavy fighting, but the Germans had relegated the Romanians to a secondary role. That of keeping the road and supply lanes open to the front.

As the Romanians prepare to go deep into a stone quarry after a local partisan cell.

We shall soon see.
30 January 1945. Near the village of Gyula in the area southwest of Debrecen, Hungary.

January was a busy month in 1945. Soviet attacks included offensives across the Vistula, across Poland and on to the Oder River. German offensives included two separate drives in Hungary to relieve Budapest. The initial drive, starting on January 1st, was unsuccessful and was called off within days.

The second drive started on January 18th and made substantial headway. The same day the defenders of Pest surrendered, it seemed that help was finally on the way. German Panzer's were once again on the move and masters of all they surveyed. The Feldherrnhalle 2 Panzer Division along with the 503rd Heavy Tank Battalion, which had been incorporated into the division, found themselves thrust into battle in the middle of a blizzard.

The Soviet advance was moving forward in little leaps and bounds. Soon the battle would be decided. The full weight of the German reserves would be used to try and stop the Guards Tank Brigade from 1st Ukrainian Front.

Here in the swirling snow the Soviets will experience the Eye of the Tiger!
25 June 1941, Near Daugavpils, Lithuania.

During the first days of the invasion the advance was more like a drive in the country. The local farmers and villagers treated the Germans like conquering heroes. Army Group North no serious resistance to report.

Then on the 24th of June the Soviet High Command reacted. The III Mechanized Corps caught 6th Panzer on the move. III Mechanized only had two KV tanks but it was enough to throw the Panzer Division into frenzy. The 6th Panzer Division was the lightest equipped of all the Panzer Divisions with it's main tank being the PzKw 35(t). That particular tank was equipped with a 37mm gun.

Immediately the call went out for the 1st Panzer Division to move back to the west to rescue 6th Panzer Division.
6 October 1944, East of Debrecen Hungary.

Throughout the summer of 1944, the men of General der Artillerie Maximilian Fretter-Pico's German Sixth Army were literally fighting for their very existence. The Red Army, pushing ever westward, was nearing the zenith of its strength.

On 6 October 1944 the 2nd Ukrainian Front, commanded by Marshal Rodion Yakovlevich Malinovsky, went over to the attack. Malinovsky had recently been promoted to Marshal of the Soviet Union on September 10, 1944. He was a very able commander and he now set his sights on clearing Hungary of German troops.

Marshal Malinovsky had ordered 6th Guards Tank Army to attack to the west in the area south of Oradea. Oradea was the exact same area that Hitler had ordered Armeegruppe Fretter-Pico, with two newly arrived panzer divisions (the 1st and 23rd), to attack Soviet positions.

These two forces are about to clash in the mountains of Hungary.
german attack during beginning phases of barbarossa
Soviet forces assaulted a german company-sized strongpoint in village on main mountain in area.
As the first snows fell in 1941, the German Army was at the gates of Moscow. But it had been a hard, long summer of campaigning and the units were worn thin by casualties, loss of equipment and wear and tear. That year it was a hard winter and as the snow got deeper the Russian offensive suddenly burst on the German forward units. Widely scattered, low on men and supplies there was no way they could establish an ‘elastic defence’ system and they were not prepared for winter lacking proper clothing, cold weather POL for their vehicles or even suitable vehicles. Facing the bad weather the German withdrew into the villages for shelter and formed a front made up of these village strong-points and the main arterial roads linking them which were patrolled by mobile armoured units. Keeping to the road, the Germans were able to maintain contact between the villages and artillery support was provided from batteries located in the larger villages.

Axis and Allied forces clash for a small town and large hill.
Task Force Baum was a secret and controversial task force setup by U.S. Army general George S. Patton and commanded by Capt. Abraham Baum in late March of 1945. Baum was given the task of penetrating the Siegfried Line East 80km into Germany and liberating the POWs in camp OFLAG XIII-B, near Hammelburg. Officially it was a rescue mission, but many believe that Patton ordered this raid since he knew that his son-in-law, Lt Col. John K Waters, was a prisoner at the camp. The raid ended up a failure, as German forces closed in on the delayed task force and destroyed them during their return trip. However, the valiant effort of this small unit penetrating deep inside enemy lines is a testament to the bravery and resourcefulness of the American Army during WWII.

A pivotal event in the operation was the attempted crossing at the riverside town of Gemünden. Gemünden which mean “the mouthing” was named so because its location at the confluence of the Sinn, Main and Frankische Saale rivers. Not making this crossing would seriously delay the task force by hours in reaching Hammelburg. Each minute was important as the Germans were starting to track the task force and move in units to counter it.

No 2 in the CMBB Combat History series Bäke Battles: “Der Mensch” In The East”, this scenario follows on from the earlier CMBB scenario "Bäke's Prelude at Pokhlebin".

After the victory at Pokhlebin, General Raus is supremely confident in the superiority of his tank forces. In the steady rain of a brief thaw, 6th Panzer sent most of its mobile forces in a Kampfgruppe commanded by Panzer Regiment 11's Colonel HĂźnersdorff across the Aksay on the road toward Verkne Kumsky early on 14 December.

Encountering only light opposition at first, most of the Kampfgruppe had just arrived in Verkne Kumsky around 9am when the first Soviet combined tank and infantry attack struck the village from the north. As this attack was being repulsed, reports from both captured Soviets and the II Panzer battalion's light recon platoon of Pz IIs indicated that a large Soviet tank force was on the move southeast of Verkne Kumsky.

In order to "fully use his mobility and his full firepower to seek out the enemy in the open terrain", Col. Hßnersdorff immediately ordered Major Dr. Bäke to take his reinforced II Battalion out of the village to find and destroy the reported Soviet tank force. Bäke used terrain cover to move his force some 4km south of Verkne Kumsky just to the west of the road and then turned them to the east. One of the most critical and intense tank battles in the history of the Eastern front is about to begin, and Major Bäke will be in the thick of it...
Bäke's Winter Storm II H2H

No 3 in the CMBB Combat History series Bäke Battles: "Der Mensch" In The East", this scenario follows on from the earlier CMBB scenario "Bäke's Winter Storm I".

15 December 1942
The bulk of Panzer Regiment 11, under the leadership of Colonel von HĂźnersdorff, is assigned to the forward mobile defense of Verkhne Kumksy, a critical jumping off point for the next thrust toward Stalingrad. Major Dr. Bake is deputy commander of this force. A holding force under Hauptmann LĂśwe is set-up in the village of Verkhne Kumsky itself.

But the tankists and motorized infantry of Colonel-General V.T. Volksii's Soviet 4th Mechanized Corps are full of confidence and grim determination too. They spearheaded the southern pincer that surrounded the 6th Army in Stalingrad and they will die before allowing the German rescue attempt to succeed. Despite the blue skies above the Kalmuk steppe another winter storm is about to break...
